A sinus lift is when extra material is grafted between the jawbone and the sinus membrane on the top set of back teeth. To determine if a sinus lift is appropriate, a dentist will take several scans and digital images of a patient's mouth.
Once implanted, this material is left to fuse with the jawbone, making it deeper and wider. This gives the dentist more material to work with when they're fixing dental implants into your mouth.
A sinus lift is sometimes required to give more material to fix dental implants in place. A graft will be needed on people who have lost some of their jawbone as a result of:
A dentist will determine whether you need a sinus lift or not when they assess you for a dental implant.
A sinus lift procedure typically takes between one and two hours depending on its complexity and size. This will be done either at a dental practice or hospital under local anaesthetic. Some sedation can be given when required.
After the initial procedure, the graft will take some time to fuse to your jawbone. During this time, you may be required to take antibiotics and anti-inflammatories to reduce pain, swelling and the chance of infection. The graft should become fixed to your jawbone after four to nine months.
The cost of a sinus lift varies depending on the amount of material and level of aftercare required. The procedure isn't available on the NHS but payment plans and finance options are available for private patients.
